Valor and Victory
This year marks the 80th anniversary of World War II. This special program will look at the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe through the lens of classical music, which was a significant and sometimes surprising part of life during the war years and after. The war and its aftermath inspired composers to reflect feelings and events of the time. This special will emphasize music that honors the sacrifices of WW II as well as celebrating victory and the spirit of that era.
Valor and Victory will also feature voices of the times (Churchill, Roosevelt) and give a sense of the atmosphere of wartime and victory. Music by Beethoven, Verdi and Chopin played a role, as did works by Aaron Copland, William Walton and Olivier Messiaen. Composer Masao Ohki was one of the first Japanese musicians to respond to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with his expressionistic Symphony No. 5. Film and theater music were also significant in the way they reflected the mood of nations in conflict.
This will be an updated version of the original 2020 special.

Andrea is a freelance host/producer for Minnesota Public Radio and APM. She has hosted several national specials
in the past and was also a regular host for Music Through the Night. Andrea lived in Northern Ireland prior to working for APM
and in May 2022, she returned to live in Ireland. She continues to work on a freelance basis on a variety of projects and broadcasts.
