Haitian Voices: Exodus, Community, and the Vital Role of Music
We’ve all heard the stories. Haiti has descended into chaos, controlled by violent gangs and corrupt leaders, with desperate Haitians engulfing American cities where they’ve been met with an often-hostile reception. That’s what we hear. But, if we listen more closely, there is another story, a story told through music.
This documentary weaves together the voices of Haitian artists and activists, in dialogue with historical audio from the one of the world’s most distinguished radio archives, Radio Haiti-Inter, now housed at Duke University. We chronicle how Haitians have always used song as the preeminent tool for preserving their shared memory of oppression and injustice — and for mapping a hopeful vision for their future.
Our co-hosts are journalists, Haitians and sisters, Nathalie (Talie) and Mélodie Cerin, with Nathalie in the U.S. and Mélodie in Haiti.
Produced in collaboration with the Round Earth Media program of the International Women's Media Foundation.
Hosts
Nathalie (Talie) & Mélodie Cerin: Our co-hosts are Haitian sisters whose own reality reflects that of many Haitians today; Talie lives in the United States, and Mélodie is in Haiti. Talie is a musician, mixing Haitian folk with American soul, a testament to the two cultures that have shaped her as an artist and a woman. Mélodie is a student of history and public policy. Together, they edit (and Talie co-founded) Woy Magazine, an online meeting place for Haitians, providing rigorous reporting on the country’s history, politics, and art.
